Coins of kerala...

Sangam Cheras - The Cheras ruled northern Kerala and the Kongu plain in what is now north-western Tamil Nadu from around the 3rd century BCE to c. 250 CE. Their copper coinage seems to have been issued largely at Karur. Ancient coins of Sangam Cheras are listed here.

Venad Cheras - Venad Cheras of Ancient Kerala ruled during the period c.800 - 1102A.D. It seems the coins issued by were influenced by the Cholas to an extent. After the fall of the Kulasekharas of the Chera kings, we see Venad an independent power coming up. Venad (also called Ilayadathu Swaroopam) comprised most of the travancore region and the region earlier occupied by the Cheras. This kngdom reached its zenith under Udaya Marthanda Varma (1175-1195) and Ravi Vrma Kulasekhara (1299-1314). Quite a few nice coins of venad chera are given here including Thirai kasu and Anantasayanam issues.

Travancore - The modern history of Travancore begins with Marthanda Varma who inherited the kingdom of Venad, and expanded it into Travancore during his reign 1729–1758. His successor Rama Varma who was popularly known as Dharma Raja, shifted the capital in 1795 from Padmanabhapuram to Thiruvananthapuram. Rama Varma's period is considered as a golden age in the history of Travancore. The State of Kerala came into existence on November 1, 1956 A.D. Many coins of Travancore including gold Thulahbharam issues are listed here.

Canannore - Canannore Ali Raja of the Arakkal dynasty, ruled the northern part of Kerala. The Arakkal, Kerala's only Muslim royal family controlled parts of the coast and even the laccadive islands! 1/5 Rupee silver coins of Kannur(Canannore) are listed here.

Cochin - A few coins issued by the local rulers and the colonial dutch are illustrated...

Tellicherry- Coins issued by the British in Tellicherry.

Other South Indian Coinage...

South Indian Dynasties from 5th-14th Century. - Various gold coins issued by south Indian dynasties such as Kadambas of Hangal,Kadambas of Goa,Chalukyas,Yadavas of Devagiri,Rashtrakutas,Hoysala,Kakatiyas etc. are listed here...

Gangas Of Talakkad (Elephant Pagoda) - There are many variations of these beautifull Pagodas/Gadyanas with a figure of Elephant on one side and a floral scroll on the other side. Many of these specimens have kannada legends on top of the elephant. These Gadyanas were issued by Gangas of Talakad. But it seems they were not the only dynasty to have issued coins with similar design.

Vijayanagara - The Vijayanagar kingdom, established by the Sangam dynasty around 1336AD was perhaps the most powerful and magnificent kingdom in South India at its time. By the late 15th century, however, the power of the center had waned, at least in part due to the inroads of Muslim invaders. The reign of Krishna Devaraya (1509-29AD) was perhaps the high point of the Vijayanagar realm. Coins of Vijayanagara rulers are listed here...

Hana/Fanam - Many dynasties issued these coins known as Hana with many varieties. Fanam is the Anglized name for the real term Hana. Some of them are common and some very rare. You can see many of these beautifull specimens here...

Others - More interesting items that does not fall into the above categories like Madras Presidency Pagodas, Dutch Occupation Pagodas and more...
